Live & Direct: Bartees Strange

When you listen to a song, you’re hearing the distillation of the artist’s experience and emotions. It could be recent events that directed the creative process, it could be the result of accumulating years. In the case of Bartees Strange and his new album “Farm to Table,” it’s both. His childhood living in various countries, his adolescence as the only black child in his school, and his foray into non-profit and government work in Washington, D.C., make their way into his non-genre-specific music. Rock, folk, jazz, and hip-hop factor into his work.

“Farm to Table” is an emotional journey through a year of difficult and exultant personal growth. Whether writing about the impact covid has taken on his family (“Heavy Heart”) to a song for George Floyd’s daughter (“Hold the Line”) you’ll find yourself pulled not just into a beautiful mix of music, but into the life and heart of a remarkable emerging artist.
