Pittsburgh Artist of the Week: Essential Machine

Seth Apple

The Greensburg-based family band Essential Machine are putting out a new album this year as they embark on some new musical adventures. The first release from the record is “Waiting” — a song that the band hopes will inspire us all to push the world to a more positive place.

RJ, Robert, and Karen Dietrich recently spoke with WYEP's Joey Spehar.

What’s your musical history up to this point?

RJ: From folk duo to indie synth rock family band. Essential Machine is always on the path of evolution.

How do you describe your sound?

RJ: Indie Synth Rock

Robert: Indie rock mixed with 80s new wave. Although our upcoming album "Compressor//Sustainer" is a bit more Radiohead inspired.

Karen: new wave mixed with post punk and 90s grunge

Tell us more about the song "Waiting." What inspired you to write it and what does it mean to you?

RJ: It’s a song that came from a place of isolation. It’s about the paralysis that can set in when the world around you is burning, and you’re stuck in your own world watching it burn. The song gives me hope that by expressing these feelings we can push back our inactivity and move the world towards a more positive place together.

Robert: To me this song epitomizes the restless feeling of being an independent artist in an economically and politically difficult time.

What was a recent album that really changed your life?

RJ: Dead Pioneers self-titled debut record. It’s a raw record about Gregg Deal’s experience living as an indigenous person in America.

Robert: When I discovered "Two Star and the Dream Police" by Mk.Gee last year I couldn’t stop listening. He has a talent for writing hooks and vocal melodies that I strive for. It’s lo-fi indie fused with R&B and some of the catchiest songs I’ve heard in a minute.

Who are some other Pittsburgh artists you think more people should listen to?

RJ: There are so many but here are some I love. Frame and Mantle. Anti-Corn League. Poster Child. Sunny Daze & the Weathermen.

Robert: BBGuns, Frame and Mantle, Gloomer, Old Neon

Karen: Anti-Corn League and Frame & Mantle

Any other super interesting things about you we should know?

RJ: Although I was born a Florida Man I’m now a true yinzer.

Robert: Outside of music I’m well-renowned for my impeccable impression of Joe Swanson from Family Guy

Karen: I’m the author of two books and now, I’m co-writing a sci-fi novel together with RJ.

Joey Spehar is a Pittsburgh native who started as a volunteer D.J. at WYEP, fresh out of college in 2006. He took on any job they’d let him do like editing audio, engineering remote broadcasts, and shoveling snow.
