Who knew that the messy state of touring post-pandemic could be to Pittsburgh’s gain? Well, that’s most definitely the case when it comes to the shoegaze/indie pop band Colatura.
While on the road during that turbulent time, the then-Brooklyn based band found themselves with a day off in Pittsburgh after a show cancellation due to COVID. They got some good pizza, walked around Allegheny Cemetery, and went to a fun DIY basement show. When Jennica and Digo Best (married couple and members of the band) lost their NYC apartment soon afterwards, Pittsburgh just made a lot of sense as their next destination.
At last year’s festival, Jennica and Digo introduced themselves to our own Joey Spehar. Joey was pretty impressed with what he heard, as was the whole music staff here at WYEP. When the song "Do You Miss Her" was released late last year, it was a pretty easy decision to start playing it and have them in our studios for a Live & Direct Session.
Colatura’s shoegazy indie pop sound will be on full display at the WYEP Summer Music Festival this year. Come on down to Schenley Plaza, June 21!
Colatura are:
· Jennica Best - vocals/guitar
· Digo Best - backing vocals/guitar
· Devan Davies - bass
· Alex Kirkpatrick - drums
Little trivia for ya:
The bands name is both a reference to "Colatura di alici" (an Italian anchovy-based juice) and a coloratura soprano (Jennica's parents are Opera singers).
Some notable songs:
· "Do You Miss Her" - You might have heard us playing this song in recent months. It really shows off the shoegaze side of their sound.
· "Suffer Dude" - This song has been stuck in my head the past week. A good kind of stuck in my head, too. It's putting a smile on my face.
· "I Wanna Get Better" - A new song about letting your younger self know that life hasn't been particularly great so far. Sounds bleak right? Give a listen. It's not all doom and gloom. Also, pretty catchy.
· "I Can Talk To Your Voicemail" - Another new song that came out in the past couple months.
· "Absent Mind" - A great dreamy pop song from their 2022 full length "And Then I'll Be Happy"
