WYEP Remembers: Sinéad O’Connor

WYEP paid tribute to Sinéad O’Connor on July 31st, 2023 at 8 PM with an hourlong tribute to her music and career.

Sinéad O’Connor passed away on July 26th, 2023 at the age of 56. She was an Irish singer-songwriter who gained international recognition in the late 80s and early 90s. Known for her powerful and emotive voice, as well as her distinctive appearance, O’Connor’s music spans a range of genres, including pop, rock, folk, and world music.

Her debut album The Lion and the Cobra was released in 1987 and quickly garnered critical acclaim for its innovative mix of Irish influences and contemporary pop music. In 1990, Sinéad O’Connor’s career skyrocketed with the release of her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. This album included her cover of Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which topped charts worldwide and solidified her place in music history.

Throughout her career, O’Connor released ten solo studio albums and was known for her outspokenness and her activism. She frequently voiced strong opinions on topics such as child abuse, war, and women’s rights, which have sometimes courted controversy.
