Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh's finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Scott Mervis of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
In case you missed it here's what he played with commentary by Scott:
The Dropkick Murphys, “Rose Tattoo” - You never have to worry about the Murphys reinventing the wheel, as the band sticks to the Irish punk jigs and reels that brought them to the dance. Here’s a good ol’ drinking sing-along that includes a cry of “Black and gold, we wave the flag!” So, it’s not our Black & Gold, but we can use it anyway.
The Wandering Rocks, “Hell & High Water” - Here’s a familiar voice for Pittsburghers. Karl Mullen made his name here in the late ’70s with Carsickness, and moved on to the folkier Ploughman’s Lunch and a solo career, getting quieter and more traditional along the way. Here’s the debut from his new Massachusetts-based band, named for an episode from “Ulysses,” making its first Pittsburgh appearance at Club Cafe on January 18.
