Laura Veirs

The Fox! A feisty little animal that happens to be the subject of today's Cool Kids segment. Not to be confused with Ylvis' "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)", this song is a traditional folk song about a fox finding food for its family.

Many people know this song and love it, and hopefully you love it too! Laura Veirs does the version we played on air (it's her 40th birthday!), but check out this version by Jimmie Rodgers! If you like it enough, you could probably even get your kids to sing along with you!

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh's finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Andy Mulkerin of Pittsburgh's City Paper.

In case you missed it here's what he played with commentary by Andy:

Broncho, "Insert Coin" - Broncho re-released their debut album, Can't Get Past the Lips, on Fairfax Recordings a couple months ago, so while this isn't technically new, it's new to a lot of us who missed it when they self-released it in 2011. This track is kind of post-punk sounding, but most of the album is driving, witty garage-punk. Highly recommended.

Laura Veirs, "America" - Laura Veirs is a musician's songwriter; she puts together solid songwriting and great orchestration to make some wonderful tunes. Her new album, Warp and Weft, is great, and she's playing Club Cafe Sun., Sept. 22.
