Your kids might be familiar with "Whip It," Devo's 1980 hit single, but WYEP Morning Mix host, Joey Spehar, knows that they'd really love to dive deeper into this New Wave bands discography. Beautiful World was released on New Traditionalists, Devo's fourth studio album in 1981. When on tour for this album the band developed a new style which included the "New Traditionalist Pomp" based off of John F. Kennedy's hairstyle, and wore getups they called "Utopian Boy Scout Uniforms". Yikes!
This song features a positive message for kids to adhere to with lyrics that talk about how beautiful the world is. The beats and synths in this song will get anybody moving. Check out the music video below!
Today's Cool Kids jam is a fun song about a not so fun activity: working in a coal mine. Even though coal has been a major energy source here in Western Pennsylvania, it still has a dark and sooty past. Children used to work in the mines and suffered many major injuries and deformities as a result.
Luckily, there are now regulations in check to keep kids from working in coal mines. These days, kids think cleaning their rooms is the worst think that could happen to them. Imagine what would happen if they worked in a coal mine for one day! They'd never complain about making the bed again. Even if they won't cooperate, at least we can be glad they're safe.
Devo provides the room cleaning tune for the day. "Workin' In A Coal Mine" is the name of the song, and it's great to hear such a funky song while working. Enjoy!
Alan Myers, the drummer for the band Devo has passed away after battling cancer. Myers' musical peers dubbed him the nickname "Human Metronome" because of his style of drumming. Now current Devo drummer, Josh Freese. broke the news early this morning around 1 in the morning.
RIP Alan Myers. 1 of my all time favs. An underrated/brilliant drummer. Such an honor playing his parts w/Devo. Godspeed Human Metronome.
Myers gained recognition for his drum skills on the Devo albums, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and Freedom of Choice. Myers was only the drummer of Devo for about a decade but was in the band for their biggest hit "Whip It," which reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980.
