Bridging the gulf between rock n' roll and classical music, conductor/arranger Brent Havens takes the podium to present The Music of Queen, a program he scored to extend the listening experience of Queen's exceptional tunes. Performed by your Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and amplified with a full rock band and vocals, Havens captures Queen's distinct sound while presenting some familiar and lots of new musical colors.  Heightened by rock concert lighting, experience Queen’s epic masterpieces, including “We Will Rock You,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and more, performed live by vocalist Brody Dolyniuk – for one night only – with your Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall.

True Blues: Corey Harris, Guy Davis, Alvin Youngblood Hart

Hosted by Corey Harris, a MacArthur Grant recipient, and featuring renowned roots musician Guy Davis and Alvin Youngblood Hart, True Blues chronicles the extraordinary living culture of the blues in an evening of music and conversation. The True Blues concert vividly brings to life this crucial wellspring of American music.

Both Corey Harris and Alvin Youngblood Hart were featured in Martin Scorcese’s “The Blues: A Musical Journey,” which followed Corey on a roots journey to West Africa. Alvin contributed, as well, to Wim Wenders’ ” The Soul Of a Man” and Denzel Washington’s “The Great Debaters.” Guy has often followed in the Thespian footsteps of his parents, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, most recently in the Broadway revival of “Finian’s Rainbow,” and earlier in “Mulebone” and “Robert Johnson: Trick the Devil.”

Blues is at the center of their artistry, and the blues takes center stage in True Blues, the concert.

Grand Classics: Bach, Beethoven & Brahms

Originally written for organ, Leopold Stokowski orchestrated Toccata and Fugue in D Minor in 1927.  It has since thrilled audiences and was made famous in popular culture by Disney’s Fantasia.  With its fiery, rich harmonies and the powerful spirit of this symphony, it is surprising that the fourth is one of Beethoven’s lesser-known works.   With playing touted as “superb, tightly controlled and forcefully articulated” by The Los Angeles Times, pianist and wildlife conservationist Hélène Grimaud returns to Heinz Hall with Brahms’ fierce and dramatic first piano concerto.

Frenchmen on Penn - Water Seed

Music Night on Jupiter and the Pittsburgh Winery are proud to present "Frenchmen on Penn" an ongoing series featuring some of the finest musicians and acts New Orleans has to offer.

What do you call a musical gumbo that recalls the ancestral strut and joie de vivre of the New Orleans’ Tremé, the drama and ecstasy of the church’s wailing floor, and the suited-up sophistication of jazz threaded with the party funk of Parliament? What do you name sounds that hail from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and the red dirt South all at once? How do you label music that simultaneously evokes all of the uncontainable energies and passions exploding from so many disparate musical legacies? Here we call it Water Seed.
