Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh's finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Scott Tady of The Beaver County Times.
In case you missed it here's what he played (with commentary by Scott):
Brick + Mortar, “Locked in a Cage" - Greetings from Asbury Park drum, bass and samples duo Brick + Mortar, whose foundation is built on beat-oriented hard-rock that doesn’t pander to the dance clubs or alt-rock scene. Comparisons to Alt-J, Sleigh Bells and Arctic Monkey are legit.
Willy Mason, “Pickup Truck" - Mason jars you with his voice – both rugged and sensitive. And wait until you hear that little surprise yodel he uses at the end of this song, from his new album released yesterday. Sure he lives on a preppy Massachusetts island, but this is mighty fine alt-country, absorbed in a world-weary wisdom with guitar that follows a sparse trail with an underlying intensity. “This album was written in a damp shack during a winter when it seemed like the whole world was falling down, or at least shifting its stance,” the 28-year-old Mason told American Songwriter.
