Margot Bingham

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh's finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Scott Tady of The Beaver County Times.

In case you missed it here's what he played (with commentary by Scott):

J.D. Eicher and the Goodnights , “Ode to the Underdog” - "I’m what you’d call a work in progress/not the portrait, but a sketch,” sings J.D. Eicher, frontman for this Pittsburgh-Youngstown pop-rock band releasing its third album Saturday with a show at Club Café. He’s being modest; Eicher has actually developed nicely as a wordsmith, vocalist and all-round creative artist. He named his third album “Into Place,” which sequentially follows the titles of the band’s prior two albums to form the defining sentence “The Shape of Things Shifting Into Place.” Joy Ike and O.A.R.’s Jerry DePizzo make guest appearances. There’s a fun rant, “You’ve Got a Lot of Growing Up to Do,” that still manages a buoyant melody befitting a band that’s drawn comparisons to Keane and The Script. I went with the opening track; one of many cuts with a memorable hook, based on a thick bass groove.

Margot Bingham, “I’m Going South” - Viewers of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” are about to learn what Pittsburgh audiences first learned several years ago – that Margot Bingham can flat-out sing. The Scott Township native, and former two-time “Female Vocalist of the Year” in the Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards, has been cast as a jazz singer in the new season of “Boardwalk Empire.” Bingham sings two songs on the critically acclaimed show’s brand-new soundtrack, alongside such luminaries as Elvis Costello, Neko Case, St. Vincent, Patti Smith and Liza Minnelli(!) I went with this pick for its smoky, 1920s speakeasy vibe that playfully references “Dixie” and Stephen Foster’s “Old Folks at Home” aka “Swanee River.”
