The Local 913: Good Sport

Ryan Hizer, the man behind the synth-rich Good Sport, started taking piano lessons around 5 or 6 years old at the behest of his parents.

“Even though I might have resisted it a little bit, I still did it for 2 or 3 years and that instilled a fundamental interest. When I was in 5th or 6th grade there was a call for school band. I decided I was going to play drums. That oddly shaped my approach to music forever. I was really interested in the rhythmic side of things, but then I also gravitate towards keys and synth-based instruments.”

Hizer’s project Good Sport, originally a solo effort, has since blossomed into a full band (“But we’ve only played one show as a band!”). As for the name Good Sport: “There’s not a specific purpose behind it. I really like sports so maybe that fed into it but I doubt it. I just kinda thought it was a cool name.”

Ryan has a few releases under the name Good Sport, including “Somewhere I Should Be.”

“It was one of the first songs I wrote when I put together my solo live rig, which was kind of limiting. It’s all loop-based and you build loops in real time. It came about trying to figure out how to perform live. By way of trying to figure out how to make this thing work and make it enjoyable to watch, I also accidentally wrote an OK song (laughs)!”
