The 9:13 Buzz with Patrick Bowman

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Patrick Bowman!

In case you missed, it here's what Patrick played:

Frank Ocean, "White Ferrari" - Frank Ocean just released his hotly anticipated follow up after the generation defining Channel Orange dropped in 2012. Blonde released like most albums do these days, suddenly and online only on Saturday night August 20 after weeks, even months of speculation.

Ocean has increasingly cut the figure of a reclusive, sensitive artist, adding mystique to his loads of talent, coveted collaborator by pretty much anyone in the industry. Blonde lived up to the hype...it's deep and rich and emotional and nuanced artistically and confident and full of life. "White Ferrari" is this devastating ballad that comes late in the album and almost left me in tears the first time I heard it...Bon Iver actually appears to duet with Frank on the outro.

Blood Orange, "Augustine" - Blood Orange is Dev Hynes, a British singer, songwriter, producer, author who I've actually played on the show before about a year ago, or longer, with his track from the Palo Alto movie soundtrack. He's worked as a producer/songwriter with Kylie Minogue/Brittney Spears/and provided one of the best songs on Carly Rae Jepsen's last amazing album Emotion. He's back with his third proper record Freetown Sound, and it builds off all the things he does well, namely filtering his soulful, R&B, and jazz chops through Kate Bush inspired art pop, for this really lush, symphonic sound. It's a very personal record, wrestling with issues of race and social justice (Freetown is the name of the town in Sierra Leone where Hynes' father was born) and people consider it in the same breath as Kendrick Lamar's TPAB and D'Angelo's Black Messiah. "Augustine" is one of the album's highlights, with Hynes putting on this weird, Lynchian lounge act persona, alternating between low tenor, sing song lyrics, and a soaring chorus that sounds almost gospel-esque.
