The 9:13 Buzz with Patrick Bowman
Whitney, "Golden Days" - Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich, both formerly of Smith Westerns, just dropped “Golden Days” from their upcoming debut album Light Upon The Lake out June 3rd on Secretly Canadian. It keeps some of that androgynous pop glam of their former band, while imbuing it with this sort of sincere innocence. They also kept SM’s tricky recording habits of lo-fi artistry and applied it here...I'm a sucker for a song that sounds older than it does, or analog or warm in some way. This sounds like a Badfinger demo or something like that...they can certainly evoke a place and time.
Frankie Cosmos, "On The Lips" - 22-year old Greta Simone Kline, better known by her stage name Frankie Cosmos, and daughter of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, started as a bedroom artist; she’s released over 40 albums on her Bandcamp; and she sings so soft it could lull you to sleep. On her sophomore studio album, Next Thing, which just dropped last Friday, she's still culling from her insanely prolific bedroom years, pulling the song "On the Lips" from a quiet acoustic release in 2013 im sorry im hi lets go. It's so quiet and sort of dream like, with a weird sort of logic and poetry. Initially, I kind of dismissed her as way too twee to take seriously—I think she did a performance for Pitchfork in the middle of a miniature town with toy railroads, like they have at the Carnegie Science Center—just screaming to soundtrack a slow-mo closing scene from Wes Anderson...but this song stuck with me...and the rest of her album does the same.
