The 9:13 Buzz with Patrick Bowman

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh’s finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Pop City's Patrick Bowman In case you missed, it here's what Patrick played: Neon Indian, “Annie” - Austin-based Alan Polomo became one of the big names in the microgenre of Chillwave when he released his debut Psychic Chasms in 2009. He’s back a new single “Annie” and the rumor of a third full-length coming in the next year. “Annie” is like an evolved version of what Polomo made his name on: gone are the lo-fi trappings that made his dance music sound like a warped cassette tape stuck in an old Honda Civic, and replaced with pristine production that allows the gorgeously weird, island-inflected beats to pop in high definition. Gwenno, “Chwyldro” - Welsh singer/songwriter Gwenno was most famously known for her work in the Pipettes, a British-60’s throwback girl group that made a little stir in the early aughts, but her solo work is much, much different. “Chwyldro,” the first track on her her full-length sophomore album Y Dydd Olaf, which is is going to be released in July, has Gwenno working in a ghostly meter and spacey production. The fact that she sings the song in her native Welsh only adds to the otherwordly quality.
