The 9:13 Buzz with Sarah Wardrop

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Sarah Wardrop from WFUV in New York! In case you missed, it here’s what she played: Best Coast, "Feeling OK" - The new Best Coast album California Nights is due out in early May, and its title track points to a more expansive sound for the band. This song definitely turns up the volume a bit, but it gets right to the pop punk, '90s nostalgia, recalling Letters To Cleo or even K's Choice. I also appreciate that it celebrates the grey of life: not feeling good or bad, but okay. Calexico, "When The Angels Played" - For a couple of decades Calexico has embraced the sounds and stories of the Southwest, and the cinematic quality of the band's songs continues on the new album, Edge of the Sun. The layers of instrumentation are a huge part of that visual feel, but this particular track strips them back a bit. It may be a short song, but there is a lot to grab onto in the melody and lyrics, and while it's a sad song, it's also full of beauty.
