The inevitable has happened and it is a great thing. Guitarist extraordinaire Derek Trucks, and his wife, the superb singer Susan Tedeschi, have put their successful careers on hold in order to record and tour together as the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Surrounding the pair is a group of nine musicians, many who have worked with Trucks before. Recorded in their home studio and written and recorded over an 18 month period, the ensemble shares a musical vision built around delta blues, ’60s rock, ‘70’s funk, timeless soul, and Tedeschi’s vocals.
As a song-driven album Revelator finds inspiration in Tedeschi’s ability to deliver the emotional punch while Trucks dials back the musical jams so prevalent in his separate work. This doesn’t mean his virtuosity as a guitarist isn’t relevant in the mix. Truck’s slide and electric guitar often punctuates his wife’s vocals, emphasizing the give and take in the relationship between singer and band. Producer Jim Scott has worked with a wide range of performers from The Dixie Chicks to The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Johnny Cash. With input from Trucks the delicate balance between refined production and authentic live performance is achieved. Another balancing act, the trust between singer and band is enhanced by the level of trust between the husband and wife at the center of the recording. It’s an inspiring combination.
