WYEP & Pittsburgh 250

Founded in 1974, WYEP has undeniably been a part of Pittsburgh’s cultural fabric for almost 35 years. We’re proud to be a part of Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary celebration in a big way. We love this town and its music.

Special thanks to the Allegheny Regional Asset District for providing the station with RAD Renaissance Grant funding for WYEP’s Pittsburgh Performance Project. The funding allowed a massive endeavor that combined Pittsburgh history, radio education training, and community engagement.

Through WYEP’s FreeZone youth radio workshops, WYEP producers worked with Allegheny County high school and college students to research the historic Pittsburgh venues featured in the project. Using portable digital recorders and newly learned interviewing skills, the students set out to capture the Pittsburgh Performance Project memories you hear on the air and throughout this website.
