East Liberty Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Kelly Strayhorn Theater pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the arts.
Music and dance will highlight an afternoon of activities that celebrate the life and legacy of slain Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. THe free even includes family-friendly activities in the lobby and performances in the theater.
August Wilson Dance Ensemble opens the celebration at Noon with a lively performance. Featured youth performance groups include: Alumni Theater Company, Dreams of Hope, Hope Academy, Soundwaves Steel Band, The YMCA Lighthouse Music Crew, and Visionary Dance Academy.
Several organizations including Bike Pittsburgh, Big Brothers and Sisters and the Kelly Strayhorn Photo Booth will offer arts-inspired activities for people of all ages.
At 4pm, the celebration continues with Union Project at Eastminister Presbyterian Church, which will honor Dr. King by using dialogue to focus on ways in which people are living the dream. Activities include storytelling, winners from the Girls Coalition's Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest reading their submissions and a unity dinner. These activities will occur between 4 and 7pm. and are free and open to the public.
