Community Outreach & Tours

Wikipedia.org sums it up nicely: “Green” building is the practice of increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use of energy, water, and materials, and reducing building impacts on human health and the environment, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal — the complete building life cycle.

Among U.S. cities, Pittsburgh now ranks third in both the number of green buildings and total square footage of certified green building space. Which, if you ask us, is pretty cool if your remember our city’s polluted past.

In 2006, The WYEP Community Broadcast Center became the nation’s first green radio station and the new home of 91.3fm in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood.

Built in partnership with dggp Architects and Sota Construction Services, Inc., the 19,084-square-foot WYEP Community Broadcast Center represents a big step for a station with an earthy past. Because hey, if a public radio station can build green, anyone can!

If your design group, school group or conservation club would like a tour of The WYEP Community Broadcast Center, please call (412) 381-9131 x 220 to arrange a visit. Tours are free and open to the public, pending office hours and tour guide availability.
