Billy Joel currently holds the record for the longest string of sold out shows ever at Madison Square Garden, and he'll probably do it all over again, and more, soon. His record of 12 shows could potentially be broken by Joel himself since he will be starting a residency there, performing once a month every month for as long as there is demand. Joel's next four shows at the Garden, Jan. 27th, Feb. 3rd, March 21st and April 28th, are already sold out, and he'll be performing on his 65th birthday on May 9th.

"Performing at Madison Square Garden is a thrilling experience. I've played different venues all over the world, but there's no place like coming home to The Garden. Since my first show in 1978, I've always looked forward to the energy of the crowd. I'm honored to be joining the Madison Square Garden family and look forward to taking the stage of the newly transformed Garden to create many more memorable nights," says Joel. But this isnt just exciting news for Billy Joel. Executive chair of the Garden, James Dolan said, "This new partnership will ensure that someone who has been such an important figure in our past, will also be a major part of our future."

Coming up on December 8th, Joel will also be a 2013 recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor. The Honor is given to people that have contributed significantly to American culture.

Billy Joel Madison Square Garden Morning Mix

We've got a bunch of music news stories to cover today, so hold on to your hats! This news drop features the Pixies, Pearl Jam, Kaiser Chiefs, Nine Inch Nails, and Junior Murvin.

Pixies

The Pixies have fired their new bassist, after she worked only six months with the band. Kim Shattuck has been released from service after she was brought on to replace founding member Kim Deal, who quit the band in June. Deal had been the Pixies bassist for 25 years before she left the band this summer. Shattuck announced her departure from the Pixies on twitter, saying that she was "disappointed to learn [her] time with the Pixies had ended" and that she is focusing her attention on the next album of her other band, The Muffs.

At a Pearl Jam concert this weekend, a fan went to great lengths to hear his favorite Pearl Jam song. To get the band to play "Brain of J", a fan told the band that he would shave his head for their show in Spokane, Washington. After letting the fan headbang one last time with his dreadful locks, Eddie Vedder personally cut the fan's hair, to much applause from the crowd.

Two weeks ago, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails used Facetime on his phone to communicate with a hospitalized fan. The fan was Andrew Youssef, a devoted concert photographer and journalist, and his health took a turn for the worse since the concert, and he passed away of colon cancer on November 30th. Youssef was only 38 years old. Before he passed, he wrote, “Saying goodbye to everyone was definitely the most difficult part. I felt as though I was now a part of the Nine Inch Nails family. One of the crew members even suggested I should just jump on tour with them, which was beyond flattering. As I left, the band showered me with guitar picks and drumsticks and signed the Dave Smith Prophet 12 keyboard I recently purchased as a treat for myself. I would like to thank Trent, Mariqueen, Alessandro, Nine Inch Nails, Eric, Jim, Courtney, Rob and the entire crew for such a life-changing experience. Those were honestly were the best days of my life.” Youssef said his experiences helped him identify with Nine Inch Nails' song "In This Twilight".

Another death, this time of a musician, has fans in mourning. Reggae singer Junior Murvin passed away recently in Jamaica. He was admitted to Port Antonio last week for complications from diabetes and hypertension. The singer, most known for his song Police and Thieves, had been making music for more than 30 years and was thought to be between 64 and 67 years old.

Lastly, Kaiser Chiefs have released details about their next album. The new album is called Education, Education, Education, and War, and is the first album released by the Leeds band since their principle songwriter Nick Hodgson quit last year. The album was produced by Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter) and has a release date of March 31. A few of the tracks were debuted at Lollapalooza and other festivals this past summer.

In addition to the album, there is some sweet Wes Anderson themed merch to go along with the record. My personal favorite is the Steve Zissou style beanie, but there are also buttons, t-shirts, a limited edition 7", and more!

The tribute album will be coming out in the spring, but you can preorder the album here. In the meantime, get your fill by watching Wes Anderson flicks, like The Royal Tenenbaums. This clip features Elliot Smith's "Needle In the Hay".

rosanne-cash

The highly anticipated 13th album of Roseanne Cash has garnered a heap of excitement, especially from Cash herself. "If I never make another album, I will be content knowing I made this one."

“My heart got expanded to the South, to the people I had known, to the people I met…It started by going to Arkansas, to my dad’s boyhood home…All these things started happening to feel a deeper layer of the South than I had ever experienced and I went down to the Delta, to all of the places where the great Blues musicians are from. And we went to [author William] Faulkner’s house and Oxford, Miss., and just the richness of the Delta in particular started bringing songs to us. We started finding these stories, these great stories, and melodies, that went with these experiences," said the eldest daughter of Johnny Cash.

Other amazing country musicians took part in the recording of this record, including Cory Chisel, Rodney Crowell, Amy Helm, Kris Kristofferson, Allison Moorer, John Prine, Derek Trucks, John Paul White of The Civil Wars, Tony Joe White and Gabe Witcher of The Punch Brothers. If the sheer number of awesome musicians doesn't get your blood running, then we don't know what will.

Actually, we may actually know what'll get you moving. We have the song "A Feather's Not A Bird", and we're positive that you'll love it. Listen to the song below in all its glory. Pick up the new album The River and The Thread January 14, 2014.

A public memorial will be held for the former Velvet Underground frontman at Lincoln Center in NYC, and it's a unique way to celebrate the life of this legendary musician. In most memorial services, you can expect speeches and performances in honor of the deceased, but in this case there won't be any of those things. Just Lou Reed's music, picked by his family and friends, and played for his fans.

If you're in New York City, the memorial will be held at the Paul Milstein Pool & Terrace at Lincoln Center from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Lou Reed died last month from complications during liver transplant surgery earlier this year. He was 71 when he died, and his passing has received lots of attention from musicians and fans around the world. He inspired innumerable musicians throughout the years, but his legacy lives on in his rock and in the Velvet Underground.

Jack White tribute

Every few months it seems like there is a new tribute album out on the market, covering some really fantastic musicians. In the past we've seen albums paying respect to Buddy Holly, Fleetwood Mac, John Denver and others. The latest in this string of tributes, Jack White is being honored by some of the formative musicians behind the rockabilly and punk genres. Rockin' Legends Pay Tribute to Jack White will be released on November 18th, and features 14 covers of Jack White songs, from the White Stripes to his solo material.

The list of contributing artists is as follows:

Wanda Jackson- 'In the Cold Cold Night'
Big Jay McNeely and Nik Turner – 'I’m Shakin''
Gary U.S. Bonds – 'Salute Your Solution'
Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers – 'Steady As She Goes'
Joe Clay and Cranston Clements – 'Trash Tongue Talker',
Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding – 'Another Way to Die'
Knox, Walter Lure and W.S. "Fluke" Holland – 'Seven Nation Army'
Johnny Powers – 'Fly Farm Blues'
Bobby Vee – 'We're Going to Be Friends'
Rosie Flores – 'Blunderbuss'
The Dirt Daubers – 'Fell in Love With a Girl'
Rejected Youth Nation feat. Cyril Neville – 'You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)'
the Denver Broncos U.K. – 'Top Yourself'
Los Straightjackets – 'Icky Thump'

While it may seem like White has only been around for a little while, he's actually been performing for more than 20 years, and has been quite prolific. Between The White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather, White has played on 10 studio albums. He's also played on film sountracks, produced fellow musicians' records, and been in quite a few films.

If you were hoping for an album of covers performed by Jack White, you're out of luck. But fear not! White's record label, Third Man Records, recently tweeted about his band, the Dead Weather, writing new material. Hopefully we'll be hearing from the man himself soon.

It was 45 years ago today that Neil Young released his debut, self-titled album. We'll be celebrating this anniversary all day on WYEP with music from Canada's best Americana rocker.
Some say this album didn't come out until January 1969, but they're only half right. The original mix of the album used an encoding system that made the record playable on stereo and mono systems, but it also degraded the sound quality. Young was unhappy with the record's sound and it had it partially remixed and re-released in 1969.
Did you know that today is also Neil Young's birthday?? Yes, today he's turning 68. If you're not in the mood for mathing, that means he released his debut solo album on his 23rd birthday!
Happy Birthday, Neil Young!

Mark Linkous was best known as the leader of Sparklehorse, but he also worked with Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Daniel Johnston, and many other prominent musicians. Now, 2 years after his tragic death, a handful of artists are paying tribute to the late rocker. Last Box Of Sparklers is an album of Sparklehorse songs recorded by bands like The Flaming Lips, Phantogram, Portugal. the Man, and Jason Lytle of Grandaddy.

The album is being put together by Box of Stars, a non-profit focused on increasing awareness about mental health.  The group is currently looking to the public to help fund the project with an Indiegogo campaign.
