Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Patrick Bowman!
In case you missed, it here's what Patrick played:
Chance the Rapper, “All We Got” (feat. Kanye West) - Chance The Rapper just dropped the album of the summer in Coloring Book, a gospel hip-hop explosion that is jubilant and vigilant in the face of a city, in this case Chance's own Chicago, that was decimated by urban violence and marginalization. This dwarfs every other hip hop album released this year, and "All We Got" is the track one, with Kanye West, his mentor and muse, providing production. Shout out to Selecta on Grand Groove Radio playing this before me.
Kaytranada, “Weight Off” (feat. electronica/free jazz trio BadBadNotGood)- Kaytranada, aka Louis Kevin Celestin who is Haitian by way of Montreal, is a very of the moment producer right now (and Chance Collaborator) and has worked with some of my favorite rappers including Freddie Gibbs, Vic Mensa, and Azaeilia Banks. He just dropped his first official album 99.9% and again, from end to end, it's just another banger for the summer. His production is club ready but has major world music vibes, merging house music beats with reggaeton/dancehall, and afrobeat for an album that’s just sizzling with life. “Weight Off” showcases all of his strengths: an ear for merging traditional instrumentation and samples with other wordly synths and vibes. This is a song I just wanna grab a Red Stripe and vibe to.
