Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Sarah Wardrop from WFUV in New York!
In case you missed, it here’s what she played:
River Whyless, "All Day All Night" - This Asheville, North Carolina quartet releases its new album We All The Light in August. It's not their first, but in better-late-than-never form, this song introduced me to their expansive acoustic sound. With hypnotic rhythms and harmonies, bands like HEM and The Low Anthem came to mind (the latter, coincidentally, being current tourmates of River Whyless), and with three songwriters in the band, I look forward to hearing the variety and range it brings to the album.
Erin McKeown, "The Queer Gospel" - This is the closing track of a six-song EP out this week called According To Us, and it's a signature Erin mix of wordplay and humor, depth and activism, and of course, melody. I first heard it live last month at a show and where the humor stood out then, the heart stands out now. After the Orlando shootings, this song comes with some hurt but hopefully some healing too. And pride.
