Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Patrick Bowman!
In case you missed, it here's what Patrick played:
Sinkane, "Passenger" - Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane just dropped his new fun as hell album Life & Livin It on February 10th, and it's just an excellent melting pot of influences and international sounds that never stops being the soundtrack to a party. Gallab was born in London, raised in Sudan, before his family took up political refuge in Provo, Utah. Over his career, he's played with Caribou and Yeasayer, and toured/ performed the music of Nigerian synth funk cult legend William Onyeabor. He's comfortable mixing and matching Krautrock with Dub and Afrobeat, and the song "Passenger" from Life and Livin It is a perfect example of this. You can't quite put your finger on where the song is gonna go, and if you want, you could do a deep dive dissecting up the different lineages of the beats/guitars/ harmonies, or you could just bump it. He actually played Club Cafe last week.
Syd, "All About Me" - Syd, is 24-year-old Sydney Bennett, the charismatic songwriter and performer at the center of R&B group the Internet, and also an affilliate/producer of the Odd Future Crew. She just dropped her major label debut curiously titled Fin a few weeks ago and it hits this awesome sweetspot between the best boundary pushing contemporary hip-hop, and a trip-hop warp records vibe that makes me feel like she'd be right at home touring along side Tricky in the 90s. "All About Me" is my favorite moment on the album, and its slinky, and smouldering and shows off Syd as resolutely confident in her vision and sound, really growing in to her own.
