Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of Pittsburgh’s finest music writers joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Pop City's Patrick Bowman

In case you missed, it here's what Patrick played:

Pure Bathing Culture, “Pray For Rain” - Pure bathing culture is a Portland-based duo who are readying the release of their sophomore album, which is due out in October. They’ve just dropped that record’s first single “Pray for Rain” which hits a nice balance between the woozy psychedlica of bands like Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the dancey, grooving nu-disco of a band like Rhye or Hercules and the Love Affair. This song can get the dancefloor going, or just soundtrack a good summer evening on the porch. This is actually the first song I’ve heard from them, and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Maximum Balloon, “Let It Grow” Featuring Karen O and Tunde Adebimpe - Maximum Balloon is famed NYC producer Dave Sitek’s solo project he’s tinkered with on occasion, releasing his first album way back in 2010. Sitek is best known for his work with TV on the Radio, and now for the first single from his new upcoming album “Let It Grow” features not only TV On the Radio lead singer Tunde Adebimpe, but also Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O, so it’s basically a class reunion for the biggest indie bands in the world circa 2004. I’m already nostalgiac! The song, as it to become expected from Sitek, is full of little nooks and crannies and suprises from the production, deceptively simple considering it’s built off the back of a fairly easy guitar chord progression, but the fact it lets Karen O and Adebimpe do their thing, Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton style, is what makes this such a jam.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of our most trusted music aficionados joins me (Cindy Howes) on the Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Justin Jacobs!

In case you missed it here’s what he played with commentary by Justin!

Foals, "What Went Down" - This song is going to make you want to drive faster, yell louder and maybe even punch your neighbor. Foals is an English band who started out making jittery indie-pop, and on their fourth album they blast out of the gate with stadium-sized rock'n'roll songs set to burn the world down. This is the first single from their album of the same name.

Lucero, "Went Looking for Warren Zevon's Los Angeles" - I've a soft spot for Lucero, a Memphis band whose been making dusty country-rock that sounds even better with a shot of bourbon. This is the first single from their latest album, "All A Man Should Do." It's mournful and lost, but catchy enough that you'll be bumming around humming it all day.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Sarah Wardrop from WFUV in New York!

In case you missed, it here’s what she played:

The Staves, Black & White - As The Staves, Jessica, Camilla and Emily Stavely-Taylor released their beautiful, second full-length album, If I Was, earlier this year. It grew from a musical connection made when the UK trio opened for Bon Iver a few years ago, and Justin Vernon invited the band to record at his Eau Claire, Wisconsin studio. You can hear how relaxed the sessions were as the songs unfold, with the three voices and musical personalities weaving around the lyrics.

Lianne La Havas, What You Don't Do - When Lianne La Havas stopped by WFUV in 2012, it was just a vocal and guitar performance, but with that voice and her impressive songwriting and guitar work, the combo was really all she needed. Now set to release her new album, Blood, at the end of July, there are a lot more layers to her sound, and in the case of this song, a "Hot Fun In The Summertime" riff, some doo-wop and some gospel, let her shine even more.

Every Wednesday at 9:13 am, one of WYEP’s trusted music experts joins me (Cindy Howes) on The Morning Mix to play a couple favorite new songs and share some insight. Today we welcome Jess Phaneuf from MVY Radio on Martha's Vineyard!

In case you missed, it here’s what she played:

The Hunts, "Make This Leap" - The Hunts are SEVEN young siblings from Virginia. Lovely harmonies over stringed instruments with a tambo beat all make this song a delightful tune for the summertime.

My Morning Jacket, "Get The Point" - This song is a little hidden gem on the new My Morning Jacket album, Waterfall. Here Jim James is finger-pickin' and lamenting a relationship gone wrong. I love these relatable lyrics so much. It's a really nice take on the break up song.
