The Local 913: The Vics

00:00

The Vics got their start at Cal U, but it wasn’t just a “let’s mess around in the dorms” type of situation. Singer and guitarist Bobby Dugan says they knew from the start this was a project they wanted to take seriously and were lucky to find themselves in a place with lots to offer for young musicians, "We recorded our first EP and our self-titled album at school with the help of upperclassmen guiding us and mentoring us." Bobby and the other members of The Vics studied musical performance and engineering. Though it’s a great skill to have, being both in front of and behind the board presents some interesting challenges. Dugan says, "You have to just kind of sometimes, I wouldn’t say pick your battles, but you have to just take a step back and be okay."

The Vics really shine on stage where they’re able to celebrate and commiserate with their audiences. "It feels like at a lot of our shows, there’s a collective, positive atmosphere," says Dugan. "It’s interesting because songs can be sad, down, or depressing, but though that you can connect with people and use that as an avenue. It can still all be positive in the end." As any touring musician can attest, that hour on stage often comes with 23 hours of downtime. The Vics, however, have found sparks of inspiration during those slow moments before a show. Their song “4th and Clay” came from one of those moments. According to Dugan, "We were playing a show in Jeanette, PA one time and we were just walking around the town, intrigued by all the different characters we were seeming to run into. We decided, ‘This has to be in a song.’ The whole story is just detailing the events of our day and the walk before our show."
