The Local 913: The Mixus Brothers

If The Mixus Brothers were making movies, they’d probably start with the poster and work backwards. "Our name is from a wester writer named Louis L’Amour and all of our albums are named for his books and short stories. That is something that very few people know or realize because of the genre itself not being very popular these days. If you mention it to your grandfather, he probably has heard of it. It did make for a simpler process." That’s Jebbh and Red Mixus the only permanent members of this psychedelic cowboy collective. And, no, those aren’t their real names. "We started it because the characters from the Louis L’Amour book were the Mixus boys," says Jebbh. "I think even one of them was named Red. Red and Abe. I’ve always been a big fan of that idea – of bands that take on the persona of it."

Writing from the point of view of someone else has helped The Mixus Brothers find inspiration in places they might not have found otherwise. "It definitely allows us to go a path that we might not necessarily have explored if we were making music on our own, which we’ve done plenty," says Red. "The sound that is the Mixus sound really has evolved to mean that it is a Mixus Brothers sound. I just don’t think that if I went home and wrote a song without that in mind it would be the same." However, don’t think it will be easy to neatly tie together what the Mixus Brothers do. "It has elements from all of our influences and that does go all the way from the Osborne Brothers to Ween to Pink Floyd to Public Enemy and punk bands we liked in high school. It really is a conglomeration of all of the musical influences we have, and we have many."
