The Local 913: The Local

00:00

The beginning of The Local, a Pittsburgh band, actually has roots in Belfast Northern Ireland.

“I moved to The States from Northern Ireland in the early 2000’s. I had a punk rock background. I was in The States for maybe ten years. I had wanted to write music with people, but I just didn’t. I couldn’t find the right people. Eventually, I met Ben Sweet and we made beautiful music together.”

That’s Dean Henry, guitarist and vocalist for The Local. Until Henry met Ben Sweet, not only was he immersed in punk music, but he was a drummer who had never played the guitar.

“It wasn’t until I met Ben. I drummed in another band with Ben. He encouraged me to lift the guitar and write some stuff. That’s how this all started. He’s from more of a folk background, so it was a mismatch of music, but in the end it came out better than the sum of its parts.”

It’s not always easy to categorize music these days. The lines between genres are often blurred and artists take influence from all over the place. Richie Colosimo of the Pittsburgh band Flower Crown laughed when I asked him to describe the...

The Local 913: Sierra Sellers

You’d never guess it if you saw her singing, but Sierra Sellers used to be afraid of the spotlight. Over the last few years, though, she’s really embraced the public side of her music career. "One thing that I was really focusing on was...

The Local 913: Brightside

Brightside are an indie rock band with strong pop leanings. I think they’re kind of emo too, but maybe emo is a dirty word, at least according to frontman Matt Vituccio, "It is. But, we came from an emo revival scene, so we have to embrace it."

Brightside were poised for success almost...

The Local 913: Chalk Dinosaur

Music doesn’t have to be blunt to make a point. Sometimes the meaning of art is in the eye – or ears – of the beholder. John O'Hallaron from Pittsburgh band Chalk Dinosaur says, "I used to write every song with words. It was based on lyrics and words, but at a certain point, I started to be...

The Local 913: Los Vampiros Amarillos

Jesse Baldoni used to be in a band called The Me Toos. They didn’t break up, but they did decide that calling themselves The Me Toos in 2019 was probably not the best idea. Luckily for us, they were able to rebrand themselves, taking inspiration from a different era. According to Baldoni, "Kevin...
