The Local 913: Stutter Steps

00:00

Stutter Steps is the dreamy indie rock project of Meadville-native Ben Harrison, who was drawn to music thanks to his family, where his older brother was a drummer,

“And then my dad was a trumpet player in a Dixieland jazz band. I would tag along with him to rehearsals. Just the environment of being in a band and rehearsing and writing music really rub off on me; not so much the Dixieland trajectory (haha).”

Stutter Steps’ debut album took Harrison about three years to put together. The band has just put out their second release, Floored, who’s timelines differs greatly from its predecessor.

“This new record took a different spin. The songs were written in less than a year. There is a new player involved. Phil Jacoby, of the band Sleep Experiments, started played with us shortly after we released the first record, on guitar. That added a different sensibility to that, too.

Harrison, who serves as the curator of performing arts at The Andy Warhol Museum, often finds his two identities colliding. Particularly finding the new album’s producer through the Dean & Britta performances he coordinated at The Warhol.

“This cross-pollination, if you will, was getting to know other musicians that were involved in that project. Like Jason Quever, for example, who Dean & Britta brought on as a guitar player in the house band for that project. I really liked what he did and was thrilled to have him on that project. In just getting to know him and being friendly with him, that led to this record which was made largely at his studio that he produced in LA. I wouldn’t have gotten to know Jason otherwise.”
