The Local 913: Punchline

Formed in 1997, Pittsburgh’s Punchline has always been interested in performing the kind of music they enjoy listening to and for them that meant pop-punk. Although they are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, they aren’t interested in too much reflection on the past; opting instead to look ahead to future projects. Later this year, they plan to release a live video special, which they funded via Kickstarter. They hope to record the special soon

Steve: “Now we can put on this event that’s gonna create a special experience for all the people that have been involved over the last 20 years.”

Chris: “Why I like to play in this band, even though it’s sometimes a struggle to play your bills when you’re just playing music, I like the fact that we’ll have this snapshot, this 90 minutes or whatever it is, of a beautifully filmed live performance. It’s kind of like a moving photograph that will be here maybe after we are. Regardless of how much success we have, once you’re not here anymore, maybe your music will still be.”

In addition to their video special, the band is gearing up to release a new record in late summer.

Chris: “With this new recording “Darkest Dark” I think it’s pretty evident that we had fun recording it. There’s a lot of group vocals. There’s pictures of us all holding hands singing together. The fun we had making it, comes through in the songs. I have nothing against very produced songs, but there one are a little more raw and more fun.”

Steve: “A lot of times rock bands have these big arena sounding drums that’s very unnatural [sounding]. The organic [drums] sounds that we have, I feel very connected to. We had some accordion on this song, some French horn. We’re trying to do, like, Classy Pop-Punk!”
