The Local 913: Molly Alphabet

00:00

I'm not sure I’ve met anyone who emulates the spirit of Pittsburgh more than country music singer Molly Alphabet, who was born and raised in Lawrenceville.

“I am from Lawrenceville- the 10th Ward area. My dad’s from 9th Ward, my mom’s from 10th Ward. I grew up in The 10th Ward.”

About 7 years ago Molly’s husband Chet Vincent suggested they start a country project together because his band – The Big Bend, was not playing in that style any longer and they both enjoyed old time country like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and John Prine.

“I like to try and inject a little humor and light heartedness in my songwriting. To me, John Prine is the master of making that also meaningful, so a humorous song that can also draw some meaning in the style of those classic country people like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. That all plays into the fun, light hearted aesthetic.”

Molly’s stage name comes from a nickname given to her by a co-worker she met while doing a residency in grad school. Her actual last name was hard to pronounce and seemingly contained every letter in the English language, so he dubbed her “Molly Alphabet.”

“When we were starting this country music project, my husband Chet said ‘Oh you need some sort of name,’ and I thought that was hokey or self-righteous. I’m not gonna have some kind of name! And he said ‘Well, it was given to you by a Montana Mountain man. It’s Molly Alphabet and its perfect!’ and I thought ‘Yeah okay, I’ll go with it!’”

Her new song “Lickin’ the Windows” comes from the French phrase for “Window Shopping”

“How they say window shopping in French is “faire du lèche-vitrine,” which literally means “licking the windows.” I forgot most of my high school French, but that one stuck with me. Window shopping you can really extrapolate things about how we go through the world and interact with the world through that.”
