The Local 913: Marc Reisman

Pittsburgh’s most fiery harmonica player, Marc Reisman, has been a fixture of the city’s music scene for decades. From his time in The Houserockers, to fronting blues act The Pep Boys. His passion for music all started when he was two years old.

“I actually have a picture of the phonograph my parents bought for me. I’m standing by it, smiling. Very early on, they turned me onto music. Then they forced me to take clarinet lessons for 7 years, which was just awful! Looking back, it was a great idea. After high school, I went to college and threw the clarinet away. At the end of my college career, couple of kids came up to me on the street in Oakland and said “Mister do you wanna buy a harmonica?” Then it was like a rocket ship. That changed the course of my life.”

Marc’s spent the last three years working on a solo album with collaborator Kurt Resch. Although his musical resume expands more years than he cares to admit (“Do we have to say that? (laughs)”), Strong Way is he solo debut.

“I never thought of myself as a songwriter very early one. I got into The Houserockers; I had only been playing a year or two. It’s really freeing to play original songs versus playing within a genre. I always gravitated towards people who were writing songs and thinking about what I could add to that tune. This went on for many years. Then I noticed when I was walking around, that I was singing rhythms, melodies or just words. Then I thought I’d try and record some of this stuff, which I did on my iPhone. It just snowballed from there.”
