The Local 913: BBGuns

You never know who’s watching you out there and, in the case of Joel Carter and JP Pitt from BBGuns, that’s actually a good thing. "One day I was walking down the street," says Carter, "I was listening to music and whenever I go ahead and listen to music and I walk down the street and I have my headphones on I get all animated and do my hands and whatever whatever. He saw me and he hit me up on Facebook and the rest is history." The pair started making music together a few years back and have found themselves in a pretty unique place in the Pittsburgh music scene. We’ve always been on an island of our own. Sometimes it’s like we’re too indie for the hip-hop side of things and too hip-hop for the indie side. It’s a gift and a curse, I suppose, to sit in the middle," says Carter. "We fit in with everything," adds Pitt, "But at the same time, we don’t perfectly fit in with anything."

And that’s okay. BBGuns released a handful of singles and EPs before dropping their first full-length album – Thirst – last year. The record was well received and that gave the group a big bump of confidence going into making their latest album – Help Yourself. "I think that we kind of just progressed from those same ideas, you know. We’re more confident with what we’re doing," says Pitt, "I think that when we made Thirst there was a little more uncertainty if we were doing something that was good! After the response we got, you know, it made us feel like we were making good choices. Confidence is key!" And that confidence is paying off, says Pitt. "People are more confident in us, too. I think we’ve had a lot more options of people to work with and ideas and have been exposed to different things and that’s been cool, too."

At the end of the day, however, BBGuns have their own in-house coolness detector in the form of Carter's 4 year old son. "More often than not," he says, "He comes with me to the studio and if he’s going ahead and bopping around and singing along to it when we’re doing the thing, then we’ve usually got something solid there. He’s a tough critic, though!"
