The Local 913: Amir Miles

Chicago native Amir Miles creates melodic groovy R&B that hovers in the pop world. He came to music at a young age. After giving up grade school violin lessons and fifth grade guitar lessons, he gravitated towards the bass where he played in a friend’s band for about a year. After the band broke up, Amir realized he would need a find a different instrument,

“So, I was playing with myself and I realized bass is a very lonely instrument (laughs). It’s hard to entertain yourself with a bass. I started playing guitar sophomore year in high school. With guitar, I had the urge to sing and write melody. My parents would be like “Amir, you know, you have a cool tone and it seems like you could be able to sing, but you’re pitchy” and stuff like that because would sing loud in by myself in my room. I was like “Okay cool! Let me see if it’s possible if I can learn to sing.” I could literally not sing at all. I was pitchy, but I had an idea of beat and melody. I took singing lessons when I was a senior in high school, so like three years ago. I haven’t looked back since.”

While study at the University of Pittsburgh, he met his producer Nxfce which led to a collaboration on his new song “Bad Habits.” Miles, who has an affinity for indie rock, believes he has a fresh perspective on R&B and pop

“I’m an indie kid at heart. Tame Impala, I also like Alabama Shakes. I grew up on The Killers, Coldplay, The Shins. If you listen to “Bad Habits,” it’s very loose. It gets kind of, I wouldn’t say funky, but it moves. It’s indie plus it’s kind of like a retro beat and feel. I’m trying to mix alternative indie music with a retro beat and feel with my pop vocals. Kind of like if Bruno Mars with Tame Impala in the background. Indie music has gone so far in the back with rap and alternative R&B coming so far in the forefront. It’s kind of losing itself. I feel like I can bring it back and then mesh them back together.”

Amir Miles’ new song “Bad Habits” is out now and will be included on a future EP release. For more check out Amir Miles on Facebook
