Interview with Shelia E
WYEP's Rosemary Welsch talks with drummer Shelia E. Originally aired: August 25th, 2016
Sheila E. rose to prominence in the 1980s as a percussionist and singer, hitting the pop charts with her 1984 album “The Glamorous Life.” By that point in her career, she had already played with many jazz and soul artists including Diana Ross, Herbie Hancock, and Marvin Gaye. She was raised in a musical family - her father is Latin-jazz band leader Pete Escovedo, her uncle Coke Escovedo was a member of Santana, and many cousins and uncle are successful musicians. She’s worked with Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Beyonce, Kanye West, Lionel Richie, Ringo Starr, and most famously with Prince.
Sheila E. has just published her autobiography, “The Beat of My Own Drum,” and will be performing in Pittsburgh with her band this Saturday night, August 27th at The Byham Theater.
