Guest DJ: WordPlay
Alan Olifson is the host of WordPlay, a performative show where participants read stories set to music or soundtracks. Today, he stopped by the Morning Mix for a different kind of Guest DJ set - Alan read a small sample of some previously performed WordPlay material set to excerpts of three different songs. According to Alan, this activity really demonstrates music's importance to the art of storytelling. With each reading set to a different tune, the text takes on a meaning interpreted through the lens of that particular music.
The first song Alan used was "I Turn My Camera On" by Spoon, which threw an optimistic tone over the short story of a young actor looking for work.
The second song, a cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Lookin For" by Booker T. and the MGs, brought to mind retrospective thoughts courtesy of the song's soulful instrumentation.
The final song Alan used for the set was a song that both he and Joey agreed was one of the "creepiest songs ever made" - "I Will Possess Your Heart" by Death Cab for Cutie - which certainly affected the reading in its own unique way.
